"The best adventures are the ones shared with friends"
Sunday 20th October 2024

We woke up this morning wishing we could extend our stay by another night or even two. With hindsight we should of tagged on a three night stay in Hotel B, but we hadn't, so sadly we were going home today.

We were down for breakfast at 8am where there was a bountiful buffet. I began with a bowl of fruit with yogurt. It was mostly strawberries but it also had dragon fruit, its seed-filled white flesh peeled and cubed.

I returned for a small plate of savoury items, avocado, tomato, boiled quails eggs, brie, mozzarella and boccacini mozzarella balls. I was spoilt for choice.

We hadn't noticed yesterday, (whilst having our afternoon tea) but the dinning room was actually outside in the open air.

Whilst Julie wondered what they would do in the event of rain I returned to the breakfast table. I liked the look of the scrambled egg.

They didn't disappoint, cooked to perfection, just how I like it, buttery and soft. I could easily have eaten the entire serving bowl full but felt it would have rude to do so.

We checked out and settled our bill. At S/1100 (£230) I was glad we weren't staying for three nights!  That was just for extras, the room had already been prepaid, but it did include the price of the taxi to the airport.

The executive minibus picked us up nice and early. The rush hour traffic in Lima could be unpredictable, so we allowed ourselves plenty of time to reach the airport. We set off through Miraflores, passing  Parque 7 de Juno on our way before making our way down to the coast road.

The traffic wasn't at all bad. I guess we were heading in the right direction, out of Lima. We arrived at the airport around 10:30am, exactly the recommended three hours before the flight.

We checked in our luggage, breezed through security and were deep into retail therapy inside half an hour. Julie even bought herself a pair of Chakana earrings, often called the Inca cross but is a shape that actually pre-dates them by thousands of years.

Moving on we then sat in a restaurant called La Nacional where we had a few drinks.

It was almost 12pm, a perfectly acceptable time to start thinking about lunch. I couldn't resist trying the Boliyucas. They were deep-fried casava balls filled with cheese and served with Huacauina sauce to dip. They were so delicious.

Julie was increasingly getting anxious. Thankfully there was no delay to our LATAM flight to Miami. We boarded on time and we were up in the air more or less on time. We both looked out the window and waved goodbye to Peru. It had been an incredible experience, made all the more special sharing it with friends.

We settled into our six hour flight to Miami. I watched a film called "Inherent Vice" which was extremely odd but kept me occupied for over two hours. I had an interval when lunch was served. It was the same tasty pasta dish as last time.

It was dark when we came into land in Miami. We were half an hour ahead of time which was a bonus.

We had a little over 2 hours before our scheduled connecting flight so there was a worry that getting through immigration, collecting our luggage and checking into our next flight would take too long. Those extra 30 minutes relieved the pressure a little.

In fact, to our surprise, we even had time to have our supper, a typical American meal of Southern Fried Chicken and fries for Julie, and I had a veggie burger.

As we finished eating our gate number came up and we made our way across to our Virgin airways flight to London Heathrow.
